The Smitten Rock of God >>
The Smitten Rock
I wondered earlier why the Lord Almighty commanded Moses to smite the rock during the exodus when the Israelites thirsted for water in the wilderness. When I read the portion of the Holy Word in the spirit, I was nourished greatly understanding the intended divine meaning. Exodus 17:3 says, that the Israelites thirsted for water which made Moses cried out to the Lord regarding the grave need. The Lord in reply commanded Moses to take the same staff with which he stretched out to divide the sea and smite the rock at the Mount of Horeb. We know that it was the mighty God whose power had divided the seas and held it back with strong east wind all the night. His power made the sea dry land for the Israelites to pass through when the Egyptians were in pursuit. Exodus 14:3, says that the crossing of the sea was for the Israelites to 'stand firm and see the salvation of the Lord'. While they stood still, the Lord Almighty, Jehovah, the all-inclusive One, fought for them.
Dry Land
The Dry Land that appeared signifies the Lord Jesus Christ who is our Salvation. He is the way that separated us from the sinful world represented by Egypt. The Lord became our bridge of salvation. Hallelujah. Sea represents the world and the Exodus signifies the journey of church TODAY through the timeline towards the Promised Land, The New Jerusalem. Hallelujah.
The Promised Land
In Duet 9: 1-7, we read that God gave the Promised Land to Israel, not because that they did extraordinary things and nor did they deserve it but,
1) Purely out of Grace,
2) There was great wickedness in Canaan and
3) The Lord's promise to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
Hallelujah!! The same way, our Lord Jesus Christ is the real promised land. He is given to the church purely out of His good will. This He accomplished by His work on the cross which was according to the eternal plan of God, the Father. Amen.
In Joshua 3:11, we see that the Ark of Covenant of the Lord crossing over before the Israelites into the Jordan. The Ark of Covenant is again in reality, a type of Christ given to the Israelites. The priests crossing the Jordan carrying the Ark signifies the Lord as the forerunner of the church traversing through the timeline towards Eternity. When the feet of the priest touched Jordan, the water was cut off and the water from upstream stood in heap. What a sight! Hallelujah. The Lord is the river of life and Jordan represents the worldly flow that is separating the Promised Land from the church. The Lord's flow is unstoppable. The flow of the world that comes in His path is cut off and divided. We see this in the history of the church, how the flow of the Lord became more turbulent when the world tried to hinder it throughout the ages. Hallelujah.
On one hand, the Lord is the dry pathway through death waters and on the other, He is also the life passing through it. Hallelujah. In addition, He is the destination, our Promised Land. A similar pattern can be observed in the smitten Rock episode. When we meditate deeply we will understand that the Rock that is smitten signifies Jesus Christ who was crucified for us, today's Israelites. Not only is He the smitten rock but also the water that is flowing out of it.
The separated death waters signify the flow of the world that hinders the flow of life, but the flow of the living water led by the Lord as the forerunner will flow to increase life in the thirsting ones. This flow begins from the throne of God Almighty and is flowing throughout the eternity. The Flowing God from the throne of God has become our all. This flow is uninterrupted, relentless and powerful. And this is His move today in the world today through His members.
The Rock
God is 'The Rock' (Duet 32:4) and this Rock begot us. While the Lord is the Living water of life, He is also the Rock (Duet 32:18). (Exodus 17:6) Why the Lord had arranged the Smitten Rock scene before the Israelites? While we know that neither Moses nor his staff had any hidden magical powers, it is the Lord who tore apart the rock and caused the water to come out of it. It is also significant to note that the Lord Almighty stood upon the rock before Moses. While the Lord could just bring forth water out of the ground without Moses smiting the rock, Nevertheless He did it through Moses for certain reason. Many centuries later, a similar scene unfolded on the mount of Calvary, where the Lord Almighty stood and the Israelites smote the Rock, the Lord Jesus. They crucified the all-inclusive embodiment of God on the cross. It was according to the eternal plan of the Lord that he may become a life-giving spirit flowing out of Him into the believers. The Lord Almighty's wisdom baffles us that He proved His steadfastness about His great plan. Three thousand or so years before, the Almighty had clearly shown Christ even before He was yet to be revealed. The Rock had to be smitten for the water to come out of it. The whole Bible is perfectly inline. Hallelujah. Just like neither Moses nor His staff had the power to smite the rock, neither men nor the crucifixion had the power to smite the Lord. It was the power of the Lord that smote the living Rock of Ages. His intention was that there would be a release of an outflow of living waters for thirsting ones.
The Lord is our Rock.
The Lord is our Smitten Rock.
The Lord is an outflow of water of life to the thirsty men.
Hallelujah.
